What to do, in order, in the month after a death in Pennsylvania: the death certificates, the Register of Wills appointment, the accounts to freeze, and the valuation dates that decide the 5% discount.

Where probate happens near you

Words that show up in the paperwork

Agent
The person you authorise to act for you under a power of attorney. In Pennsylvania your agent cannot also be one of your two witnesses.
Letters testamentary
The document the Register of Wills gives an executor as proof of authority. Banks ask for it before they will talk to you.
Intestacy
Dying without a valid will. Pennsylvania then distributes the estate in a fixed statutory order that ignores your intentions.
Lineal heir
Children, grandchildren, parents and step-children. The 4.5% inheritance tax class.
REV-1500
Pennsylvania’s inheritance tax return. Due within nine months of death, with a 5% discount if the tax is paid within three.
MAPT
Medicaid Asset Protection Trust. An irrevocable trust used to protect a home from a nursing-home spend-down, effective only if funded well in advance.
